As you might know, I was immensely looking forward to the BRITs last night. On paper it had amazing potential - great nominations, great artists performing...but I should have remembered, this is the BRITs, the awards show with a long history of cringe worthy performances and bad jokes. Peter Kay opened the show by saying;
"Welcome to the BRIT Awards - 20 minutes of entertainment stretched over two hours"
and lets face it, he wasn't wrong.However saying that, it was entertaining in a hide-behind-your-pillow kind of way. There were some funny moments, there were some annoying moments and there were some genuinely great performances.

The show got off to a bit of a flaky start and the audio mutes just got annoying. Either don't show it live or air it after 9pm when we are all big and ugly enough to take the effing and jeffing. My other bugbear is how we at home cannot hear the audience. The sound is muffled and therefore it makes it sound like three people are clapping and applauding and all jokes are going down like lead and as bad as some of them are, I don't actually think that's the case. Samantha Fox came on to present, a chance to redeem herself from her last BRITs presenting job perhaps...unfortunately a muff-up meant it went horribly wrong. Doh.
What did I like?
One of Kasabian going arse over tit, now that was a highlight.
Alicia Keys and Jay-Z - what a beautiful, elegant woman with an amazing voice. Where were her nominations? A great performance.

The fabulous Lady Gaga. What a great girl. She gave the most truly memorable performance of the night. Okay, she's a bit wacko but that's why I love her and I think that's why she has done so well. She's an amazing performer and I hope that she's around for a long time. She seemed genuinely pleased and thankful to win the awards, and quite fragile too.

I was unsure about Florence & Dizzee's collaboration to start with but it worked. I'm still unsure about Florence's age though. Born 1987? She looks ten years older than my mother!

JLS worked hard in 2009 and they deserved their wins I think. They gave a good performance of Beat Again. I do so wish that little fella would stop bouncing around long enough to button up his shirt though.

What didn't I like? *takes a deep breath*
Spice Girls. Who let them in?
The tosspot that is Liam Gallagher. It's not big and it's not clever Liam. Gosh, if I were Nicole Appleton I would be so proud right now. I did however spend the rest of the evening wondering which member of the audience was going home with a BRIT award embedded in their skull and it did give Peter Kay the chance to deliver the best line of the night - never a truer word spoken..."What a knobhead".

Lily Allen's giggling. Okay, so I like Lily and I wanted big things for her last night, I was pleased she won and all but she was just a bit erm, incoherent. I was yearning for a bit of whatever she'd been drinking to be slipped into my Yorkshire Tea. And what was with the wig?!

I feel harsh slating Cheryl Cole, I do. I love the girl and she's had a monumentally shit week. (Note to Cheryl: Do yourself a favour chick and shed the dead weight). She looked amazing, she delivered her performance with the ferocity and spirit of a vengeful woman but she mimed and her miming last night has opened her up to all kinds of ridicule and bad press.

Other Observations
I like Robbie Williams and I am genuinely pleased to see him back up and at 'em but like I said yesterday, I wasn't sure if his award last night was truly deserved or just a result of his re-found popularity. Had he not made a new album in 2009 would he have still received that award? I thought that he gave a good performance, a great medley of all his top hits but my overall feeling was that he was trying just a little too hard at times. It's nice to see him returning to his former glory and he's obviously keen and eager to make a proper success of it. I have however seen many comparisons between himself and Norman Wisdom which is a little worrying.

Jonathan Ross has come in for quite a slating following his appearance last night. It's not really surprising, there's not much that he can do right these days. It appears that the newspapers think he was trying to be "cool" whereas I thought he was just blatantly taking the piss.

All in all it was watchable and I was pleased that Lady Gaga got the recognition she deserved. I just wish that we could put on a slick show for once instead of the joke that it always turns into.
