I'm very excited about this book that I received last week. I discovered Anorak Magazine completely by accident - I can't even remember how, perhaps via a blog - and I was so impressed with their website I immediately hunted them down on Twitter to tell them so! I mentioned how I loved the look of their book "Food is Fun" and they very kindly sent me a copy.
Anorak Magazine is a publication for children under the tagline "the happy mag for kids" and so far from what I've seen on the website I've been mightily impressed. I'd never actually heard of the magazine before, and I suspect that might be because it's aimed at children slightly older than my own however I will be hunting down an issue (was pleasantly surprised to find a stockist local to me) to check it out further. The articles in the magazine sound interesting and are far removed from the TV-based character magazines that are popular with children these days. The magazines each have a theme like "Daredevils", "Birds" and the latest issue from Winter 2010 "Books". I am particularly interested in the "Words" issue from last Spring so might order a back issue or two.
The magazines are not only informative and engaging, they are also beautifully designed - just look at these pages!
The Food is Fun book is no different, what a joy! Designed to get your children inspired and excited about food, this 160 page book is jam-packed with lovely recipes, food facts, interesting articles, history snippets and activities.
The book is great quality, eye-catching and a pleasure to sit and read. I love the section on food in the 1940s and the Yeah! Sushi! section written with the help of Yo! Sushi! is great. The emphasis is on healthy food that children can make themselves (with assistance where required) like "Rainbow Rice", "Super Easy Cake a Monkey Could Make" and "Surprise Loaf".
I could wax lyrical about this book for ages - "Food is Fun" is fast becoming one of my favourite children's cookbooks (and I have a few...). I love it so much I almost want to frame some of the pages to hang in my kitchen! And aside from that fact that it's a beautiful thing, anything that gets children interested in healthy food and cooking is great if you ask me!
You can buy "Food is Fun" direct from Anorak Magazine in the shop section of their website, where they also sell colouring & activity books and back issues of their magazine. The book retails at £15 with free postage.

ReplyDeleteEggs yes, fish no.
ReplyDeleteApart from a couple of fishy/prawn/sushi recipes it's all fruit & veg based - some desserts, puddings, cake etc and some nice sounding veggie dishes.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have to get a copy of this for Felix - glad that it is vegetarian friendly as he doesn't have meat at home. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of this magazine before so thanks for posting about them! I want all of their issues now! :)
