Cookbook Review: New York Cult Recipes

This book jumped straight out at me, not least because of it's eye-catching yellow cover, but because if I haven't mentioned it already *cough* I'm going to New York again this year.  One of the things I am most looking forward to is all the FOOD! I already have a comprehensive plan in worked out of all the places I want need to try. So my love of New York and all things food in general meant that I was definitely going to need to read this book.

New York Cult Recipes by Marc Grossman is a book full of recipes (over 130) that aim to help you uncover "the real taste of New York" and unlock the secrets of the city's cult food establishments. The idea is to learn the secret to creating authentic New York classics likes bagels, BLT's, mac & cheese and as a big fan of US food I was very interested in this!

The book itself is a hardback, good quality book with absolutely gorgeous photography of not only the food but of that glorious city itself.   It's split into sections - Coffee time, Breakfast Time, Lunch Time, Snack Time, Any Time and Extras and as you go through the book there are also brief descriptions of some of the neighbourhoods of New York and best-known delis.

All recipes are accompanied by a high-quality colour photograph and a lot of the recipes have a little brief intro, telling you the story behind the recipe. For instance there's a New York Legend that Eggs Benedict were in fact invented by a guest staying at the Waldorf Astoria in the hope of easing a hangover!

The recipes and methodology are easy to follow and there are some great recipes and interesting ideas of foods that are both known and unknown to me!

Things that I have put a sticky note on for future reference;

Lemon poppy seed muffins
Babka
Peanut butter smoothie
Blintz
Mackerel bialys
Latkes
Pierogi
Pork buns
Honey pie
Chinese egg custard tarts
Cherry ricotta strudel
Doodles
S'mores
Banana sticks
Chocolate peanut butter cups

So quite a lot to be getting on with. The first things I am going to make are the pork buns which I might do on Saturday night and some Doodles. I wasn't aware of Doodles before but apparently they are a different type of cupcake where the frosting is in the middle. Sounds good to me!

PS I also love the list of addresses at the back of the book, I am checking all these out immediately for my upcoming trip!

New York Cult Recipes by Marc Grossman is published by Murdoch Books and is available now from Amazon with an RRP of £20.

I make latkes and blintzes regularly, not with pork buns though, LOL. Enjoy your book and your trip to NYC!

  24. Loving the sound of this book. Loads of my friends live in New York so I love to cook things that remind me of them. Not sure smores count as cooking though :)
