Yesterday I wrote a short blog post about the "50 foodie things to do before you die" that was published in Waitrose Weekend recently. Because the list was quite long I thought I'd do a separate follow-up post about what I've achieved off the list. Which isn't much, I can tell you!
So, what I have done?
1. Enjoy posh plonk with a takeaway - if there's nothing left by champers when I've got my biriyani waiting, I'm not too shy to pop the cork. No point saving until best!
4. Bake a chocolate cake with your kids, enjoy the mess - done, a gazillion times
5. Try caviar - first tried when I was 12 in my Russian lessons at school, didn't like it.
8. Indulge in bread and butter pudding - indulged, tried, not impressed by soggy bread
15. Smother Cornish clotted cream on a fruit scone - done at least once a month
16. Cook a curry from scratch and wait for the spice aromas to take over - been there, done that, had the smelly curtains to prove it. The smell from a cooked-from-scratch curry lasts forever!
20. Treat yourself to chocolate eclairs with crispy choux, Chantilly cream and quality chocolate - erm, obviously this has happened more than once.
22. Pick wild blackberries - every autumn, we're lucky enough to have an abundance near by.
24. Rediscover greengages - planted a tree two years ago!
26. Cook a perfectly timed Sunday roast - got my Sunday roast/Christmas dinner down to a tee now.
28. Grow your own vegetables - every year we grow veggies in the garden, varying degrees of success.
31. Discover the joy of baking homemade bread - I've discovered homemade bread but not yet the joy I'll admit. Not a fan of all the kneading and proving! Effort v output hasn't yet convinced me.
32. Be thrifty and make your own soup - received a soupmaker last year, love it! Will be put into good use this winter.
45. Eat fish'n'chips on a harbour wall in the salty sea air - a family tradition to do this at Poole Quay on a Sunday evening when the sun is going down after a long, hot day on the beach.
About 14 then, not great huh.
There are quite a few items on the list that either necessitate you having a lot of disposable income, travelling quite far or both! This means that there's no chance I'd ever be able to tick everything off the list however there are some I could achieve and I might add these to my own bucket list.
What would I like to achieve?
2. Have afternoon tea at Betty's, Harrogate - I happened to only mention this on Twitter the other day before I read this article. I'm desperate for an afternoon tea but I never seem to be in the Harrogate direction.
7. Breakfast in style at The Wolseley, London - Hmmm, probably not going to happen but a girl can dream?
11. Sip coffee and croissants in a Parisian corner cafe - I'm sure I'll be in Paris at some point in the future.
13. Enjoy crab sandwiches by the sea - Easy one to achieve, next time I'm by the sea for sure!
29. Make creamy and zesty homemade lemonade - Another easy one, but I might save it for next summer.
36. Make homemade ice-cream - Again, an easy one, especially considering I have the attachment for my KitchenAid. Just never seems to happen, never any room in my freezer for starters!
37. Make proper Seville orange marmalade - Am big into preserves at the moment and love marmalade so will definitely give this a go.
39. Drop in to Carnegie Deli, New York - Off to NYC next year, would be rude not to pop in and tick one of my list wouldn't it?
Some good goals to work towards there don't you think? Can't see me going to Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo or Marrakech anytime soon so those will just have to wait. In the meantime, I'm working on my own alternative foodie bucket list, so watch this space!
