Friday Foody Roundup #11

Welcome to another Friday Foody Roundup. Today's post isn't as big as the last one as I haven't been trying so many new things recently due to a combination of factors - the biggest one being dieting!  I have however had a few nice things to try.

Magnum, Cornetto and Mini Milk Chocolates

I was quite excited by this little box received in the post containing some new chocolate treats - chocolate versions of favourite ice-creams - Magnum, Cornetto and Mini Milk. In our house we're a fan of all through so I was keen to see how these would fair. The Magnum chocolate is made up of three bite sized portions, the Mini Milk are nice low calorie treats at only 94 kcal per bar and is available in milk and white chocolate and the Cornetto (which was definitely my favourite) was shaped just like a diddy Cornetto and was topped with hazelnut sprinkles and chocolate drops.  I thought these were a novel idea and they struck me as an ideal treat for children's party bags - I think the Mini Milk's would go down a storm! The new chocolates are available from all major retailers from 1st May 2013.

Gulluoglu Turkish Delight

I've always liked Turkish Delight, both the delicious chocolate covered version but more so the authentic traditional Turkish Delight.  Gulluoglu sent me a mixed box of some of their favourite flavours to try out.  In my box I had the Rose Classic Delight, Orange Rolled Sultan Delight, Cherry Sultan Delight, Pistachio Rolled Sultan Delight, Walnut Milky Sultan Delight and Cocoa Sultan Delight.  My personal favourite was the Cherry Sultan Delight, I am a sucker for anything cherry-flavoured and I thought that the flavours of all the sweets was spot on. Delicate and definitely not over-powering but flavourful and pronounced.  My father-in-law loves Turkish Delight, I buy him some for Christmas every year so a box of this is definitely going to find its way into his stocking this year! You can buy Gulluoglu Turkish Delight through their online shop and prices start at £0.24 per sweet for their pick'n'mix service or you can buy a pre-packed box, with prices starting at £9.98.

The Chesil Smokery

I'd never heard of The Chesil Smokery (but by the name I could take a strong punt that they were Dorset-based...) but I was won over by the smoked salmon I was offered so thought I'd give it a try.  I'm having a huge love affair with all things fishy at the moment! The Chesil Smokery, at the traditional smokery in West Dorset, take some of the finest British produce and gently smoke it over oak and peat. You can't buy it in the supermarket but they have their own shop in Bridport and you can also buy it online or take out one of their monthly subscriptions - you can pick from one of their boxes or do a pick'n'mix box.  I love how you can customise the box to suit your tastes.  They don't just sell fish either, there's chicken, venison and duck although personally I can't wait to try the hot-smoked salmon and the hot-smoked mackerel.  When your fish arrives if you want you can freeze it (which should be done immediately) and it can be stored for up to  3 months. Of course I didn't freeze mine, I immediately ate it with some salad and some generously butted bread and very good it was too!  Find out more about The Chesil Smokery by visiting their website.

And that's it for this month! I'll be back with more foody treats soon - I've recently been sent some cider and also beetroot and been challenged to cook with them, so watch this space!
