Meal Planning for Christmas

Sorry. I know I used the "C" word again but come on, it's October now which is practically November which is practically December. Obviously.

So meal planners (and non-meal planners...) have you done any planning for Christmas yet? It sounds crazy doesn't it but if you are making your own mincemeat and cake you want to get cracking, if you haven't already.  I'm not doing either this year so don't need to start too early but my mind has started to wander onto my festive menu already.

I'm not sure if anyone else is like me but I plan, plan, plan and ALWAYS overstretch myself to the point where it's impossible to get it all done. I can't help it, I just get so caught up it in all. Christmas Eve is a big cooking day in our house, it's become tradition that Mr M looks after the kids/visits rellies whilst I cook in the kitchen. This normally involves making a cake, mince pies, dessert for Christmas day, sausage rolls, two types of stuffing and a whole lot of swearing and washing up.  The other downside to all this planning (and therefore shopping) is I always get ill. Every year. The past few years it's been the Norovirus, then the common cold and last year the flu - in a bad way. The kids both had tonsillitis last year. All the illness inevitably means none of us feel like eating and a lot of the food goes to waste, which I hate.

I'm hoping the last few years have been a blip and I shall plan and cook on regardless! I'm looking forward to sitting down with my cookbooks in the next few days and working out lots of new things to try.  There's still a lot I want to try in Nigella Christmas which is perhaps my favourite Christmas cookbook of all time.

How about you? Do you go to into planning overdrive for Christmas? Have you got anything lovely planned for this year already? Do you tend to make new stuff or you do you have traditions of your own?

love & kisses

  1. For me, Christmas is ALL about the Baileys and White Chocolate Cheesecake. When I can make it and how much of it I get to eat! Yummmmmmmmm.

Oh, and making a nut roast as well.

  2. Since my husband and I live in Finland, we eat slightly different things at Christmas, like ham instead of turkey, etc. I have spent quite a few Christmases in the UK too and I LOVE everything my mother-in-law cooks for us! That has inspired to try and combine these two together :) For the past two years I have already made my own mince pies and I also cooked my very first roast turkey last year! Hoping to try something else this year, can't wait!

  3. I don't do Chrismtas dinner. I'd like to, but with fussy kids who are likely to turn their noses up at 90% of it, and a husband who sees food as fuel rather than pleasure, it's really not worth my effort. Last year I was feeling optimistic but it was a completely disappointing, reaffirming my belief that it's not for us.
Not sure what we'll eat this year.

I thought this year I'd let everyone choose their favourite food, so it will probably be hot dogs (eldest son), lamb (husband), garlic bread (youngest son) and pudding(me). Whatever is on the menu, it will be the best Waitrose and Abergavenny Christmas Market have to offer!
