Autumn/winter dress trends for yummy mummies

Once again the shops are full of fabulous trend-led pieces for the new season, but what should you look for if you want a new frock that will stand the test of time and motherhood? Guest blogger Jo-ann Fortune highlights three autumn/winter trends that are worth investing in.

Daytime dressing
Paul Costello was among the top name designers to showcase textured woollen dresses at London Fashion Week earlier this year, with tweed and knits proving key to autumn/winter’s heritage trend. Oversized jumpers are also making a comeback as the grunge look returns to the fashion forefront. But the figure-hugging jumper dress and tailored kick-flare dress make much more flattering choices. Look out for neutral colours, cable knits and cute collar details for pieces that will form a great base for on-trend day-time outfits.

Day-to-night chic
Meadham Kirchoff, Emilio Pucci and Clements Ribeiro all championed delicate lace dresses on the fashion week runways, from white minis to black and gold baroque beauties. Of course, black is always the most practical option, and this season’s selection of black lace dresses with half- and full- sleeve detail make for the perfect day-to-night piece.   Wear with leggings and boots in the day, and swap for tights and heels for a sophisticated evening look. Switching handbags – from your everything-but-the-kitchen-sink day-time holdall to a statement clutch bag – can also help make all the difference.

Evening glamour
When it comes to choosing your Christmas party dress this year, take a lead from the likes of fashion big-hitters YSL and Paul & Joe and inject some Studio 54 glamour into your getup. Invest in a luxe jewel-tone maxi dress or floor-sweeping gown with Seventies’ pussy-bows, bell sleeves or Grecian draping that will hide all manner of Christmas sins. Rouched detailing around the waist can also help nip you in and create a flattering silhouette. And when it comes to shopping the women’s shoes department, go for velvet or suede wedges or jewelled flats if you need to be more practical.
