This weekend I came to the monumental decision that I wanted to work from home. Well actually, I didn't really decide that. What I decided was that I wanted to earn more money and that doing some work from home might be the way forward. I guess I'm not the first person to have that radical thought.
I don't want to give up my day job. That's not entirely true actually, but it pays too well and the perks are rather great, so what I'd like to do is dabble in something to detract from how dull my day job can actually be, giving myself a bit of self-worth and hopefully some pocket money to boot.
So what I am looking for is a kind of hobby/business I guess, but something that I could earn a from too. Mr M and I have many goals and aspirations in life and it's started to weigh on my mind that if we're ever going to realise some of these dreams, even 1% of them, we're going to need a few more dubloons.
Going to back to work full-time is not an option as I wouldn't earn any more than I do now (for reasons far too long, boring and contentious to go into here) so it has to be a bit on the side. I need a way of using my brainpower and increasing my earning ability hopefully doing something I enjoy. Oh if only it were that easy I can hear you all saying!
The question I struggle with is WHAT?! I've always wanted to be a writer but I don't really have the talent or indeed the motivation to get on with it. Also I am very aware that I would more than likely slog my guts out for months and months without getting anywhere at the end of it. Sure, I might enjoy the process and I'll probably still explore it but from a financial aspect, unless I turn into the next JK Rowling overnight, it's not going to cut the mustard.
The biggest stumbling block I find myself trying to manoeuvre my way over is the fact that I can't actually do anything. Sssh, don't let everyone know that I am a complete incompetent. I'm not a jack of all trades, I am most definitely a master of none. My lack of skill and talent means I will never be able to make anything to sell and I have no real services to offer to people. Although saying that, I'm not looking to get rich quick (though, it would be nice), so perhaps it's a case of needing to go learn to do something.
This new plan is not going to go well is it?
I need inspiration and this is where you guys come in. Do you work from home? What do you do? How did you get started and more importantly what do you do when you're a talentless oaf like me?

Don't be so hard on yourself! Make a list of your strengths (BE HONEST!) and see where that takes you. I don't suppose the Avon/Body Shop/Tupperware type thing appeals?! ;) Seems like that might be an option though - your reviews etc show you are good at assessing and recommending products. Thinking of you anyway - if you need any advice regarding church-based Children and Family Work I *might* be of more use to you! xxx
ReplyDeleteThe first and most important thing hun is to stop detracting from yourself. I think you should sit down and write 100 things that you have done in life-from finishing school, to working in ___ jobs, to writing a blog, to giving birth.
ReplyDeleteWe tend to think of things like that as usual and regular and don't realize that we are really all multi talented.
The big question is what are your passions. What things do you do that excite you and that you forget yourself while doing them? Take that passion and do something with it. Make a career around a passion or you will forever be just working.

If you want to be a writer then be a writer! Yes it's a slog and it's low paid when you start out but any change of direction starts like that. You've got your blog to build on and help you get those first jobs. I was in your position 18 months ago. Working from home is not an easy option, I look after two little ones as well (although one does a few sessions at pre-school) and my eldest is at school. The school hols will be tough. To be honest going out to work in an office each day is slightly easier because you're not constantly, constantly juggling and you have some childcare. Good luck with whatever you choose, you probably won't like me saying it but you will need a lot of motivation!
ReplyDeleteI became a WAHM over 5 years ago after the birth of my second child.I work foe a local electrical company making ceiling spotlights.It requires no brain power just a little organisation and maths as I'm self employed.It's probably a bit monotonous for some but itbpays the billsans the best bit is I work around the kids.It does has it's draw backs like no paid holiday and working through illness and sometimes work can dry up.Are you a member of Brit mums? They have a work at home group maybe you can pick their brains.Certainly don't under sell your self, always think positive and you may find something that suites you.

Having worked from home for a number of years, I now find myself back in an office and, while it pays some of the bills, I am looking to either supplement my income by doing something I enjoy out of office hours or finding a way to get back to home working (ideally a combination of both).
I also find myself pondering over what it is I'm good at. I may be at a slightly later stage in that process though as ideas are starting to form, some of which I am close to turning into something real.
The advice in these comments are absolutely on the money. You need to spend time writing down (not just thinking about) what you have done over the years, which of those things you have really enjoyed and which you have a deep level of understanding in.
Over time and by looking at what you've written down (don't forget to write down the things you really didn't like or enjoy) you'll start to get a feel for where it is you want to go and what it is you want to do. It's then a case of figuring out how you can make that pay (do you offer a service, do you follow your heart and start writing more, will it be creating a product).
You are good at a lot of things. You may not realise them all but a little thought and those things will start to make themselves known.
