Gee whizz, Metal Mummy knows how to throw a little bit of a curve ball. As I have done on the past week Tuesdays, I thought I'd join in with her movie meme again as I really enjoyed the last two which were chick flicks and 80s films. Those were right in my comfort zone. World cinema is not.
I don't do films with subtitles. They take way to much concentration and for some reason foreign films have just never appealed to me. Metal Mummy has clarified for me that I can choose a film "that isn't from the country I am in" and obviously that opens up the US but that's a bit of a cop-out isn'it it? So instead I am going for Ireland and perhaps a little known film called The Snapper.
The Snapper is a made-for-television film based on the book of the same name, written by Roddy Doyle who wrote The Commitments. It's not the greatest film ever but appeals to me because it reminds me a lot (perhaps too much) of my mums large Irish family, all based in Dublin. This film was released in 1993 when I was 13. I spent a lot of holidays in Dublin in the first 16 years of life (I'm ashamed to say I've not been back since!) so this just evokes a lot of memories for me - the locations, the fashions, the accents.
The story centres around the Curley family and the eldest daughter Sharon's unexpected pregnancy and how various members of her family and friends react to the news. As you might expect there's a lot of dry Irish humour and a fair bit of swearing.
I have now got the biggest urge to watch this again!

I think Roddy Doyle is great, after reading The Woman Who Walked Into Doors I wasn't sure what to read next, but then I found a copy of The Van on a plane and read that - I couldn't put it down. I read it on the train to work and looked quite strange because I was laughing out loud so much. I watched the film with my family and because I loved it so much my brother bought me The Snapper on DVD two Christmases ago. Having read the book I knew I'd like it, but was totally unprepared for how moving I would find it. Like you I think I like it so much because I come from a large Irish family, but I think it's also just a good film. I'm away to buy myself The Van on DVD now too... :)

ReplyDeleteRoddy Doyle is a great writer, I love his books (Try 'A Star Called Henry', made me cry) but have not seen films of his books, apart from The Commitments. Glad you chose this, makes me want to see it now :)
