Product review: Glitzi Globes Showcase

The squeal that emitted from my daughter when she saw the Glitzi Globes package arrive could have been heard around the globe I'm sure. I have to be honest I had never seen the product before but clearly my 7 year old had picked up on the TV adverts and had already been planning to add this to her Santa Notebook (a place where she's jotting down things she likes whilst she remembers...I am encouraging it, it helps mummy Santa know what to get her when the time comes).

Glitzi Globes are cute, collectible DIY snow domes for children to create their own globes that they can pop, swap, share and wear.  The idea behind your globe is simple - you make it, fill it and shake it and the mini snow globes can become jewellery or pen toppers.  The Glitzi Globes Showcase is a large kit that contains a display unit with a mega dome and carousel horses, two extra large glitter tables, a ring, a dome maker, water bottle, bracelet, necklace, four domes and bases, characters, five floating pieces, six small glitter tablets and of course the all-important instructional booklet!  There are other packs available - you can buy a pack of 3 Glitzi Globes or get the Glitzi Globes Starter Kit that comes with everything you need to make your own domes including the easy to use maker device. The Glitzi Globes are suitable for ages 5+.

Now from the packaging, I'd say this is a product firmly marketed towards girls, but of course that didn't stop my son wanting to have a go with it. He collects snow globes so theoretically this is right up his street - could we have a boys or more unisex version please? Saying that, not all the characters available are girly pink and there are six themes available to collect - Carnival, Fantasy, Jungle, Ocean, Party and Princess.

So we set about making them. I tasked my daughter with reading the instructions first and working out what we needed to do. The instructions were clear and perfectly adequate for a child of her age to tackle. Putting the mini globes together was easy, no mess, no fuss and I really liked that the glitter came in pellets rather than pure glitter form which would have increased the mess-factor tenfold! The process was extremely quick and simple and both children were really pleased with how they turned out.

Next we turned our attentions to assembling the mega dome in the middle of the showcase. Again, this was straightforward following the instructions however filling up the water was slightly trickier. The water bottle supplied with the kit is a bit flimsy really and we found it rather leaky. This wasn't such a problem with the mini globes as the dome maker is designed to catch any excess but it went everywhere when trying to direct it into the mega dome and in the end I gave up and used a kitchen jug to carry on the task. It was probably the only thing that let us down in the kit.

The showcase has space for you to pop on the mini globes that come with the kit and also spaces to put future globes that you make and collect on to. It didn't feel too flimsy and my children were both very happy with it.

The Glitzi Globes are perfectly marketed to little girls as my 7 year old daughter was an instant fan before even getting her hands on them and as she's a creative type, she really enjoyed putting them together. The characters are cute and lovable and will appeal to most young girls I think. We really liked the Glitzi Globes and I imagine she'll be wanting to add to the collection pretty soon!

  2. I'm sorry, but I'm absolutely *not* showing that to Smallest. I think I know where that conversation would go.
