Operation Greenfingers

Now it's getting more spring-like, my thoughts are turning to the garden. Well in truth, my thoughts have been on the garden for a while as there have been some preparations to be made and see that up there? That's my shiny new greenhouse! I've never owned a greenhouse before so I was more excited about this than is normal for a 32 year old.  It took me about 3 weeks to decide on the greenhouse, after reading an absolute ton of reviews and I'm happy with my choice. I paid extra to have an extra opening roof vent (the garden is a bit of a sun-trap) and automatic openers on the vents (because I am lazy).  Mr M is making me a potting bench to go in there and some progress has been made as I have commenced planting!

Next to that greenhouse is my very own shed. I own a shed! One with no man-stuff in it. We got this  dirt-cheap, secondhand through a friend and it's such a good sturdy shed, Mr M is uber-jealous. It has electricity and a little tap on the outside from the water butt collecting all the rain from the gutters.  I spent a very happy Sunday afternoon organising and tidying my shed, so woe betide anyone who goes in there and messes it up.

Right next to my greenhouse, just to the left of this picture are the chooks. They're in a big walk-in run but we let them out if we're in the garden - we can't leave them unattended, we have a high fox population, which seem to be quite brazen and have no qualms about sitting on the grass in the middle of the afternoon. When the chickens are in the run they spend the whole time yelling at me. On the other side of the shed I have this;

Newly arranged vegetable beds. We're getting some turf to go in between and that should be sorted in the next few weeks. They'll also be a large pumpkin patch to the side of these.

So I'm almost set up for the season. As I said, I've already started planting. So far, I've got cauliflower, broccoli, sweet basil, chilis, cherry tomatoes and onions on the go. I checked at the weekend and after only 4 days my cauliflower and broccoli trays already had little seedlings in them! God bless that green house.

Growing my own vegetables gives me a massive sense of satisfaction and the children absolutely adore helping. We've still got baby corn, pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, peas, carrots and potatoes amongst others to get get going, so watch this space!

Are you growing anything this year? Leave me a comment below and tell me what you are planning.

  1. Look at you! Looks amazing. I'm not interested in my garden in the slightest but think I should be. So am a little bit jealous! Enjoy it

  2. Personally no but the husband has all sorts of seeds starting off in the conservatory. Carrots, Brussels, leeks, basil, oregano, salad....probably more! He has set his potatoes outside and he's getting worried about the recent frosts. He has a huge man shed and I have my shack....which I really want to have electrics in so I can sit out and sew whilst OH digs and does the garden. Your garden looks lovely x

  4. I am very jealous of your veggie beds! I have 2 greenhouses but not a lot in there at the moment, just some tomatoes, peppers and chillies.

    I also have some peas and carrots in a little raised corner bed on the edge of the patio.

    I love that you have your own shed. Ours is full of tools and C's toys at the moment!
