4th Birthday Cake

Following on from my earlier post about the best ever Victoria sandwich, I used this cake as the basis for my daughter's 4th birthday cake last week.

This year she had requested a ballet cake. Now, whilst I can make cake to a reasonable standard, I am no decorator. I have neither the artistic flare or the patience required for cake decorating. Obviously I did what any self-respecting desperate mother would do - I turned to Ebay and bought a rather pretty cake topper.

I had BIG plans to make the cake into a wonderful piece of art complete with lettering and colour co-ordinate candles however in the end I was rescued by the little miss who decided that she wanted to decorate the cake. Normally this kind of interference would have me running for the hills but this was good - this took the pressure of me having to make a half-decent job of it.

So I let her loose. I let her loose with edible glitter, little gold balls, jelly diamonds, hundreds and thousands and made her some pink gloopy icing. She also chose a rather gaudy "Happy Birthday" topper and we found four pink candles which she lined up in a nice neat little row (she's slightly obsessed with lining things up I fear....). It actually turned out okay in the end, not bad for a 4 year old I thought, and of course true to form, it tasted bloody brilliant!

  1. Good decoration! Nothing wrong with lining things up either. I sometimes make sure the remote controls line up with the side of the coffee table. OCD? Me?!

  2. I must admit to having a few OCD tendencies myself. For one, I like everything at right angles.
